the annotated johnny cavalier

  • Okay, now I remember why I did Joe Cocker as a two-part episode: Fall Break. I wanted a cliffhanger type situation to straddle the first and second quarter of that year, like a TV show would do between seasons; perhaps my first unintentional hint that I wanted Johnny to be on the big screen and not in the funny pages.
  • The girl with the nunchuks (sp?) is a reference to the Ninja Turtles.
  • I really had a thing with trains back then.
  • Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) from the X-Files. I remember watching an episode (or maybe it was the X-Files movie) where they were on some travelling laboratory train. The alien on the operating table is a nod to Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction?.
  • Fiction.
  • I had fight with Paul about the name of Thomas the Tank Engine. I always thought it was Thomas the Train Engine, and I thought I should be the expert, since I watched every episode with the brother and sister. But lo and behold, the internet proved me wrong -- and Paul right -- once again.
  • Hey look! Johnny Cavalier and Joe Cocker have the same initials!
  • I was visiting with my uncle Dennis over fall break, and after I told him about my fascination with trains and train jumping at Grinnell, he gave me a short but stern lecture about the dangers of the rails. The spirit of the speech snuck its way into this cartoon.
  • After I had turned this cartoon in to the paper, I was milling around the publications office, and somebody exclaimed: "What's going to happen to his bus??" And I was like, "Christ, I don't know." I still don't.
