- Paul Carlson and I were on our first Wal-Mart trip together early in the fall of '98 when we picked up a tape of Joe Cocker's greatest hits. We played it over and over again, and eventually Joe Cocker became the third roommate who was always on tour. I can't exactly say why he became such a god to us, it's truly bizarre. Last fall when I was living in Manhattan I was walking home from work and passed a theatre where Joe Cocker was playing that evening. The tickets were $30, and I felt that I needed to purchase food that week, so I ended up passing up the chance to see my hero in concert. Oh well, it wouldn't have been the same without Paul there, anyway.
- Irk, irk became the official language of the Grinnell squirrel.

- Everyone on campus loved Ani DiFranco, and I was getting pretty sick of it, thus I made her bus break down.
- No rock concerts are ever held in the fine arts building -- they're outside or in Harris.
- That's Paul in the seventh panel, wearing his classic Hawaiian shirt. I put him in because we shared the Joe Cocker fixation, plus it was a thank-you for being my editor on the strips. He began to appear in every fifth episode.
- I'm in the next panel, holding a 2x4.
- Joe Cocker is singing the "A little help from my friends" song, made famous by the Wonder Years opener, and the classic Woodstock performance, from which the photo in panel 2 is taken.
- The weird looking characters in the last panel are from my first Scarlet & Black strip, Third Party. God, they're ugly.
